Hi Johan,
Sounds like you flashed the firmware correctly. Can you please provide a photo of the adapter in the Game Frame and verify you have the pins properly aligned?
On a side note, if it’s ever necessary you can re-flash the firmware by putting the Photon into Safe Mode:
https://docs.particle.io/guide/getting-started/modes/photon/#safe-modeJeremy WilliamsKeymasterRolf: Again, this is incredibly useful information. This leads me to believe some Teensy boards aren’t supplying enough power to the IR receiver. I would be curious to know if using the “good” Teensy board on the troublemaker fixes the problem there. Likewise, the only other thing that uses 3.3V is the microSD card, so a final test could be to swap those and see if there’s any effect.
If you have time to test these two things sometime I would (again!) greatly appreciate the help! In the meantime, it’s good to know the Photon solved your problem.
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterRolf: That’s helpful information. Thank you. Next question… if you shine a light into the IR port on both Game Frames, does it look generally the same inside? The port is above the display in the center of the black border. You should be able to see a little electronic receiver.
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterBoris: In case you don’t know, you can already switch between clock/gallery modes. It’s just not documented yet. See this thread.
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterCool, firmware is the same between them then. I look forward to hearing about the remote test. And sorry for getting your name wrong, I’m on cell phone today. 🙂
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterTold: No, nothing has changed. Do both remotes perform the same, regardless of which Game Frame you use? Are both Game Frames running the same firmware? I.e. is the problem isolated to Game Frame hardware?
Osmurf: Ack! Send me an email (Jeremy at this donain). We’ll figure this out.
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterThanks for the suggestions, Boris. I like the Game of Life idea. I’m not so sure about the clock ideas, since they run the risk of dramatically complicating a feature that already tests the limits of elegance due to how the system delay performs differently in Clock and Gallery modes.
The Tetris animation is neat — it would be fun to see a game play out autonomously. Kind of like the old Pong clock idea.
I suspect a text scroller sounds more compelling than it is, since it would be very hard to read without giving it your full attention from the start of the scroll. It also goes against the low res nature of the thing. I prefer animations that are perfectly at home at 16×16 and instantly convey a message (e.g. the Wi-Fi Twitter/Email alerts).
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterDoes it work as expected when setting the clock, or do you get double and missed presses there too? To be clear, you do need to aim the remote generally toward the top, front of the display.
One other thing to try is testing the behavior in a different room, preferably one with no other electronics, just to rule out IR interference.
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterHm.. It’s possible that the native brightness feature doesn’t work on that one LED. I’m happy to replace the LED for you but you’d have to send it to me for surgery. Otherwise, if you’re happy with the previous firmware and using the software brightness control, there’s nothing else that changed.
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterGreat! Thanks for following up.
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterTry the latest firmware! The new brightness code is a real improvement across the board and should allow you to get some really dim results with the % feature.
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterCan you post some photos of your assembled board? Were you able to blink the Photon LED over the internet as a part of its setup process? When you flash the Game Frame firmware, does the Photon LED blink pink for a second or two?
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterPlease followup when you try a new battery! I’m very curious.
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterImageMagick Version 7 support added. See first post.
Jeremy WilliamsKeymasterI experimented with a piezo (buzzer) but hated it.
